There are about 60 castles from the Middle Ages in Hunsrück. Kastellaun Castle is one of the more important. It served for a time as the residence of the Counts of Sponheim and was an important factor in the development of the town. Like most other castles in the region, it was destroyed during the War of the Palatinate Succession at the end of the 17th century. Nevertheless, the complex is of great interest in terms of architectural history.
