Variety garden Zeltingen-Rachtig

  • Zeltingen-Rachtig

Almost 50 kinds of fruits and berries from all over the world are to be found at “Sortengarten”. Some are native; others were imported either a long time ago or very recently, further were newly discovered for the Moselle region.

Vines were brought by the Romans to the Moselle region as agricultural crop. Long established fruit as medlar, peach, plum or walnut were originally native in other regions of the world. Are there, due the climate change, alternatives to domesticated plants which are cultivated alongside Moselle to ensure a sustainable use of the abandoned vineyards? In order to test that in course of land consolidation a variety garden was created Zeltingen-Rachtig, where numerous fruit trees and berries were planted. All plants need high temperatures in summer and at the same time have the frost-hardiness for Moselle winters.
