Castle Thurant

  • Alken

Partly built on Roman foundations, Thurant Castle is one of the oldest castles in the Moselle region. Turrets, half-timbering, statues and ivy-covered walls characterize the castle. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Thurant Castle is a landmark visible from afar above the village of Alken on the Moselle. Partly built on Roman foundations, it is one of the oldest castles in the Moselle region. Count Palatine Heinrich, a brother of King Otto IV, built it in 1197 - returning from the Crusade - to commemorate the futile siege of the Syrian fortress "Thuron". In 1209 the castle was also documented. The castle is the only double castle on the Moselle, which was repeatedly involved in conflicts over the years, so that hardly one stone remained on the other. After the conquest by the two archbishops of Trier and Cologne, the Thurant was even divided into two halves with a thick wall in 1248. So that from now on everything was built twice: separate living quarters, separate entrances to the Cologne and the Trier part. Each conqueror had his area administered by his own burgrave. Today, the lovingly restored Thurant Castle is privately owned. Doors and arches, battlements and wooden walkways can be discovered along the paths in the castle. A hunting room, a small chapel worth seeing, a wine cellar with barrels and a dungeon can also be admired. The climb to the platform of the Cologne Tower is worthwhile. At the top, a magnificent view opens up over the courtyards, vineyards and the Moselle. Benches in secluded niches are scattered throughout the courtyards. The castle kiosk (with a cozy back room) offers smaller dishes like sausages and potato salad. Ever lived in a real castle? Stay with up to six people in our tastefully furnished vacation home "Sporkhorst" along with the garden within the castle grounds and experience the unique flair of the castle and the Moselle.
