The castles in Treis-Karden, at the confluence of the Dünn and Flaumbach rivers, date from the 12th and 13th centuries. Treis Castle, the closest castle to the village, stands on a rocky cone and offers an imposing sight with its towering, square keep. Wildburg Castle, originally called Wildenburg, is a hilltop castle built around 1235 by the Lords of Wildenberg. The palace of the complex is considered one of the best preserved from the Romanesque period. After being destroyed in the Palatinate War of Succession, the Wildburg was rebuilt between 1957 and 1997. The local community of Treis-Karden acquired the Treis castle group in 2021, along with the associated building complex of the Wildburg mill. Guided tours can be booked at www.treis-karden-mosel.de.
