The people of this region came to the Christian faith through the work of St. Castor and St. Martin of Tours, i.e. as early as the 6th/7th century AD. Ernst became an independent parish in 1377. At that time there was a church in "Oberernst" and another in "Niederernst".
Both churches were demolished after the construction of the present parish church, which you will have noticed with its mighty towers. The latter was built in 1845/46 according to plans by the famous architect Johann Claudius von Lassaulx at a central location between the two original village areas. We would like to invite you to visit this church. The interior of the church was completely renovated in 1980/81. On closer inspection, you can enjoy the colourful yet harmonious design. The leaded windows date from 1912 and are outstanding in their colourfulness. The high altar was created in 1896. The figures in its niches represent St Sebastian on the right and St Quirinus on the left. St. Quirinus was venerated as the patron saint of the former Niederernster church. The advanced wooden people's altar was built and donated by the local carpenter Günther Kappell † in 1981. The pictures of the evangelists set into it come from the former pulpit. The beautiful sounding historical organ was built in 1868 by H. L. Voltmann from Klausen (near Wittlich) with 20 stops and mechanical play and stop action. It is the oldest organ still playable by Heinrich Voltmann, who ran an organ-building workshop in the pilgrimage town of Klausen near Wittlich from 1852-1909. Almost the same organ, also by Voltmann, with 21 stops is in the parish church of St. Maternus in Ürzig on the Moselle; it is about half a year younger.
