With the donation of the village by the Polish Queen Richeza in 1051 and 1056 to the Brauweiler Monastery near Cologne, which was founded by her family, Mesenich also received its first chapel, which was consecrated to the monastery's patron saint, St. Nicholas, by Archbishop Egilbert of Trier on 18 November 1088.
