Situated right on the Saar River, with colourful fishermen's and sailors' houses. On the houses you will see a row of old signs. Most of the inscriptions show the initials of the person who built the house and his wife, the year of completion and the symbol of his profession. Motifs such as fish, anchors, boat hooks and oars show that the houses were once inhabited by sailors and fishermen. The flood defences were built in 1987 as a result of the Saar's development into a major shipping route. In the years previous to that, the old quarter was constantly under threat from flooding. High-water levels have been marked at various places along the houses.
