Moselkern stretches with beautiful half-timbered and quarry stone houses from the banks of the Moselle, opposite the Druidenstein, into the romantic Elz valley. Worth seeing are the Merovingian cross, on the forecourt of the parish church of St. Valerius, and the town hall. The oldest town hall on the Moselle, dating from 1535, is a special feature, not only because it is an impressive example of Moselle half-timbered construction. In the wall of the ground floor you can still see the iron ring on which lawbreakers were tied up until the French Revolution and exposed to the ridicule of the population. The so-called "Merovingian Cross" is a stone monument from around 700 (original in the Rhein. Landesmuseum Bonn, replicas in front of the church and at the cemetery of Moselkern). It is considered the oldest representation of the crucified Christ in monumental art north of the Alps. The mode of representation is unique and without parallel in the art world. The image of Christ is combined with geometric motifs symbolising the cosmos. From Moselkern, a hike through the Elz valley to the famous Eltz Castle is worthwhile.
