Roman wine press Brauneberg

  • Brauneberg

Here you have proof: the Romans already made wine on the Mosel, white and red. And they already knew where the vines thrived best!

The famous vineyard "Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr" was apparently already popular with the Romans, because they built a winery directly at its foot. Situated so close to the shore, it was easy to load the fresh must onto a ship and take it to the wine cellar. Perhaps directly to the imperial residence of Trier? There was an imperial cellar master there, and the Roman winery was probably state property. Not only was white wine produced, but red too, and apparently it was coloured with elderberry and cherry juice. This is how the wine press worked: the grapes were put in a large basin where they were crushed with bare feet or mashers. In the process, juice flowed off into a lower basin. Then the grape mass, which still contained a lot of fluid, went into a press basket to finish pressing. Once again, the juice flowed off into a basin, from which it could then be drawn easily. It is best to see this on site. And try the wine, which was already enjoyed by Merovingian King Childebert, Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon!
