St. Quirin Kapelle Gipperath

  • Wittlich

The former Catholic parish church of St. Quirin from the 16th century is dedicated to St. Quirinus.

In 1556, the already existing chapel in the early Gothic style in Gipperath was expanded into the church that still exists today. The feast in honor of St. Quirinus is celebrated annually on April 30. There are many legends about Quirinus' life. According to tradition, as a Roman tribune, Quirinus was the jailer of St. Alexander, who converted him and his daughter Balbina to Christianity and baptized them. Under Emperor Hadrian, Quirinus was persecuted as a Christian and beheaded. Devotion to the martyr Quirinus spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. The cross on the front of the church depicts the 12 tribes of the apostles. Behind the stone slab are finger bones as a relic.
