Skippers and fishermen have been populating the banks of the Saar in the lower city since the 17th century. Some of the colourful houses still bear the house symbols of these professions, displaying fishes and anchors. In 1987, a flood protection wall was built in Saarburg as part of the process of expanding the Saar to become a major waterway.
