A landscape with an abundance of highlights. And it is the best way to combine them all. Welcome to the Moselsteig Trail! Certified as a “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe”

The Moselsteig Trail. Surprising. Challenging. Thrilling.

Spanning a total of 365 kilometres, the Moselsteig Trail is not only one of the longest, but also one of the most diverse quality long-distance hiking trails in Germany: surprising diversity, challenging in its length and thrilling by nature.

Diverse experiences await the hiker on 24 legs, each of entirely different character. They lead through forests, vineyards, along the banks of the Moselle, as well as along slope edges with magnificent views. They thrill with their closeness to nature and rich cultural history. The many viewing points ensure memorable views. And if that's not enough, there are interesting excursions in the immediate vicinity on the Moselsteig trail’s certified partner circular hiking trails, side trails and Moselle ‘dream paths’ and ‘dream path’ excursions.

General information

Directions

Hiking in one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes in Europe, that's hiking on the Moselsteig trail!

With 365 varied hiking kilometres divided into 24 different stages, the Moselsteig trail runs along the German Moselle from Perl on the German-Luxembourg-French border to the confluence in Koblenz. This makes it one of the longest quality long-distance hiking trails in Germany and one of the first to carry the European “Leading Quality Trail - Best of Europe” seal of quality.

During a hike on the Moselsteig Trail, the impressions are as diverse and fascinating as the landscapes that the path crosses. Sometimes through forests, sometimes through vineyards, sometimes along the banks of the Moselle, and sometimes along promising slopes that provide views of the connecting ribbon of the Moselle. Such variety ensures that a hike on the Moselsteig trail is great fun. This trail through nature is breathtaking and continually leads to history-rich culture. Numerous vantage points provide unforgettable views - of the cultural landscape and the river, which have been shaped by viticulture for centuries.

The stages on the Upper Moselle inspire hikers with open, wide landscape with gentle, vine-covered hills, from which the view extends to the neighbouring countries of France and Luxembourg. Further downstream it leads to Trier, Germany's oldest city. The landscape changes here: The course of the river is breathtaking with its world-famous meanders, steeply sloping vineyards and picturesque, world-famous towns such as Bernkastel-Kues, Traben-Trarbach, Zell (Mosel) and Cochem. And finally follows the Terrace Moselle: The river valley becomes narrower and has high and steep flanks and terraced steep slopes in part. Scenic and cultural highlights, such as Europe's steepest vineyard, the Bremmer Calmont, or Eltz Castle are directly on the route. Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, where the Moselle flows into the Rhine, finally marks the end - or the start - of the Moselsteig trail.

Moselle wine and local hospitality during a stop or overnight stay, make a hike on the Moselsteig trail an extraordinary experience. If you want even more from your hiking trip in the Moselle valley, you shouldn't miss out on the side trails (circular trails to the Moselsteig trail).

Safety Guidelines

The Moselsteig was created as a demanding hiking trail. A sure foot and a head for heights are required for some stages of the Moselsteig Trail. These sections are indicated in the route descriptions for the individual stages.

Equipment

  • The Moselsteig is a demanding hiking trail through the low mountain range.
  • We recommend sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate, functional hiking clothing for all stages.
  • The Moselsteig repeatedly leads through different places in the Moselle valley. Especially in summer, we recommend that you pack your rucksack with sufficient food and especially drinks, because some stages lead over longer distances through sunny vineyards.
  • Please also note that some shops, restaurants and overnight stays are not open during the winter months.
Tip

Along the route, the Moselsteig offers a multitude of hospitality businesses: These include hotels, guest houses, holiday apartments and campsites. In addition, there are numerous restaurants, cafés and taverns just waiting for you to take a leisurely rest along the way.
