The short circular walk high above the Moselle village of Piesport is ideal for a short hike - on the tracks of Roman legionaries.

Based on numerous finds, it is proven that the Romans lived in Piesport over 2000 years ago and cultivated wine in the region. This left its mark on today's wine landscape, which can be explored on this hiking trail.Insights into the hiking tour:The high-level hike along the "Panorama Hiking Trail Piesport" is about 5 kilometres long.  The hike leads through forests and meadows, often along the edge of the forest. On the way there are fantastic views of the Eifel and Hunsrück mountain ranges. At the "Großer Moselblick" there is a 180 degree panorama over the Moselle valley with the wine villages of Piesport, Minheim and Neumagen-Dhron - the highlight of this hike. In the immediate vicinity is the "Weislei" mountain hut - a perfect place to enjoy the surrounding countryside and get some refreshment. There are no rest stops along the way, but in the Moselle village of Piesport there are numerous restaurants offering typical Moselle food and drinks.

General information

Directions

In Piesport, the L 50 state road takes you up the mountain in a few serpentines. Where the valley level is reached, a small tarred road branches off. The hike begins and ends here at the "Piesporter Heiligenhäuschen" car park. First follow the small tarred road for about 150 metres. Then the path branches off to the "Weislei" barbecue and shelter hut, where the "Große Moselblick" (Great Moselle View) offers a fantastic panorama of the Moselle valley and the Hunsrück mountain ranges. Gently the vineyards extend on the opposite sliding slope to the Moselle. There a Roman military road led down to the river already 2000 years ago. On the other hand, behind the Piesport houses, steep bulging slopes rise up the Moselle, densely planted with vines. The route continues through a forest path back onto the tarred road. After a few steps on tar, follow the turnoff at a birch grove (or make another detour to the hang gliders' launch site and return to the turnoff). Through the forest the path leads you to open meadows. If you reach a hill with a bench on the meadows, you can see numerous elevations of the Eifel in good visibility. Now the path leads you a little bit towards the place of pilgrimage Klausen before a turn-off with signpost announces the way back to the starting point. Then you walk mainly along the edge of the forest.
