Circular hike in the Hunsrück on old Roman roads. Mostly on wide forest paths, sometimes along rivers: Tour with ups and downs.

Hiking on paths that were already used by Roman legionaries!Gornhausen - the starting point of this circular hike - is a lovely village between the valleys of the Middle Moselle and the heights of the Hunsrück and therefore a hiking trail with a decent elevation profile.Insights into the hiking tour:The hike starts from Gornhausen in the Moselle side valley and offers many sights along the way. A panoramic view far into the Eifel awaits you at the Kaisergarten and magnificent brook valleys are hiked along the Kieselbornbach, the Herrenbach and the Frohnbach. Another highlight is the Barbelley Rock (see tip author). On the Hunsrückhöhe, you will also pass a part of the historic Roman road - which was between the Roman settlement of Belginum and the Moselle fort of Neumagen. It is also the eponym of this hike.Along the way, the freshly restored "Klaramühle" mill is a nice place to stop for a bite to eat.

General information

Directions

From Gornhausen the route takes you uphill in the direction of Haardtkopf. Halfway up, at Kaisergarten, a panoramic view far into the Eifel awaits you. The path then leads leisurely up the Hunsrückhöhe to the Roman road, which was part of the historic Roman road between the Roman settlement of Belginum and the Moselle fort of Neumagen. Shortly before the Weinplatz, the trail leads you down into the forest along the Kieselbornbach stream and past the ruins of the Staudtenmühle mill. You will reach the small village Hirzlei and the Frohnbach valley. Here you walk slightly uphill again along the Frohnbach stream to the Klaramühle settlement, a café. From there, the route leads you steadily uphill along the Herrenbach and the Barbelley rock, and then back to Gornhausen.

Safety Guidelines

The mostly wide roads offer sufficient alternative possibilities, should for example vehicles of the forestry office cross their way.

Equipment

Hiking boots and rucksack provisions are recommended.

Tip

The rugged rock formations around the Barbelley rock are a nice photo motif - here you can also take a break.
