Rolf Mayer, not quite as old as his great idols, Georges Moustaki, Hermann van Veen, Hannes Wader, Georg Kreisler, the early Bob Dylan and, and, and..., was forced at home to learn French and English by hook or by crook, whether he wanted to or not. If he always had to struggle in his school days, he can now use these languages meaningfully in his MUSIC OF OLD MEN to discover that joy, happiness, bad luck, love, peace, sorrow, loneliness, justice and injustice also occur in other countries and in other languages: IT JUST SOUNDS DIFFERENT. What would we have done without the music of the music-making poets? They knew how to put our hardships into words and sound. They will always keep a place in our minds. The songs reflect the ups and downs of his time, which he likes to tell about, not to lecture, but to sympathise with the fact that everyone has his or her own baggage to carry, but that it is much easier if you carry the baggage together and stand by each other in trust, just as his great role models already knew. Much of what is now the past was his future. HIS SONGS PROTECT US FROM FORGETTING.
