Comedy by William Shakespeare
Viola and her twin brother Sebastian suffer shipwreck and are washed ashore on two different coasts of Illyria. Viola disguises herself as a man and enters the service of Duke Orsino under the name Cesario. Orsino is unhappy because the Countess Olivia, whom he adores, does not return his love. Orsino now sends his new servant Cesario as a love messenger to Olivia. She is moved by Cesario's appearance and spontaneously confesses her love to him, which he (that is, Viola) rejects. By chance, Olivia later encounters Sebastian, who has also been rescued from the shipwreck, and mistaking him for the beloved Cesario due to his similarity, she finally finds reciprocated love with him. Meanwhile, the actual Cesario, Viola, has long fallen in love with Orsino. In Olivia's house, her drunken uncle Sir Toby is taking charge and has set his sights on his niece's money. Together with the maid Maria and the foolish suitor Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Sir Toby stages a malicious, bitter comedy against the arrogant steward Malvolio.
The world premiere of "What You Will" took place in 1601 or 1602 under the title "Twelfth Night, or What You Will." The original title is a reference to Epiphany Night as the conclusion of the twelve nights of Yule. In Shakespeare's time, this opening of the carnival season was already celebrated with masks, disguises, and pranks.
