The Terraced Moselle under Nazi Rule A lecture by Dr. Christof Krieger
"The Terraced Moselle under Nazi Rule" Do the terms "German Wine Route" or the title "German Wine Queen" originate from the Nazis? What led the people in the predominantly Catholic Moselle communities to stop voting for the "German Center Party" and instead cast their votes for the Nazis?
Years of crisis in viticulture, an assault by the tax office in Bernkastel by the winemakers in 1926, government viticulture policies and wine advertising during the Weimar Republic and its end. Perhaps these were the causes for ideologies and slogans like "Wine is the people's drink" or "Drink German wine" which, according to the Nazis, aimed to tap into new consumer groups for local wine. The initiative developed into a successful campaign called "Wine Sponsorship." From 1935 to 1937, more than 1000 cities from the Ruhr area to East Prussia adopted "Wine Sponsorships" for individual winemaking towns, primarily from the Moselle region. Along with other propaganda measures, such as the German Labor Front's "Strength through Joy," which also organized trips to the wine regions, this resulted in the most extensive wine marketing campaign that Germany has ever seen. However, you will learn that this Nazi propaganda was based on nothing but a series of unusual coincidences in Dr. Christof Krieger's highly interesting lecture on January 18, 2026, at the Vinothek in Winningen Hospital.
