Guided tour of the roof structure and the vault in Trier Cathedral
It was hardly surpassed in drama: The structural stabilization of Trier Cathedral was one of the greatest challenges during the major renovation of the cathedral from 1964 to 1974. After all, the then 1600-year-old house of worship was on the brink of collapse. There were no off-the-shelf solutions; instead, a unique methodology had to be found, as unique as the Trier Cathedral itself.
In addition to foundation and masonry injections, a "clamping system" was developed that still holds together the previously drifting walls. From the attic, tension straps secure the stability of the 1700-year-old cathedral. This system can only be sensed in a few places from the ground floor of the interior – during this tour, you will have the opportunity to access areas that are otherwise closed off. Join us on two galleries in the cathedral and take an exclusive look at the fascinating technical achievements of the last cathedral renovation in this anniversary year.
