Iron, copper, silver and slate were extracted from the mines near Veldenz by miners in earlier centuries. The counts of Veldenz even minted their own coins with the silver.
Learn more about the mining of the Veldenz counts on a hike lasting about six hours with Daniel Götte (hiking distance: approx. 9 kilometres, 370 metres in altitude, medium difficulty).
Even today, some of the tunnel entrances, the remains of the Veldenz copper smelter and iron hammer and even the traces of a more than 4-kilometre-long water ditch system with a reservoir and an underground wheel chamber can be discovered. There are many other exciting and interesting things to tell about mining. With the help of the mining traces, the mining activities of that time come alive again.
