Guided Tour
After the old synagogue in Zuckerbergstraße was desecrated during the Reich Pogrom Night in 1938 and ultimately destroyed in the war, one of its rubble stones served as the foundation stone for the new synagogue building on Kaiserstraße, which was inaugurated 18 years later, in 1957.
The tour of the synagogue not only demonstrates the architectural features of the monolithic structure created by Alfons Leitl, but also introduces you to Jewish life in Trier today. During the tour, you will also visit the old Jewish cemetery in Weidegasse, where the Jewish community buried its dead until 1925; among the nearly 550 preserved gravestones are those of Karl Marx's great-grandparents and grandparents, as well as Marcel Proust's great-grandparents.
