Kasalla

Open-Air at the Sparkassen stage

Not always are the ideas that two guys have at 2 AM after a long party at a kitchen table really good. But from what former "Peilomat" guitarist and songwriter Flo Peil and singer Bastian Campmann planned, something emerged: Kasalla. Together with old and new companions Ena Schwiers, Sebi Wagner, and Nils Plum, they jumped into the rehearsal room with the plan to combine the music we love with lyrics in the local dialect.

However, what it actually means to be a member of a band whose music is a fixed part of the repertoire during the fifth season, is hard to imagine elsewhere. "During the carnival season, you play two hundred (!) times in just six weeks, which is about ten performances a day," outlines Bastian Campmann the workload between early January and mid-February.

"We want to show people that the dialect does not restrict music to Ufftata - but actually expands the possibilities of making music," says guitarist Flo Peil, and the plan worked. "Mer Sin Eins" is so far the longest and most extensive work - the tracklisting includes a proud eighteen songs. "More won't fit on a CD," chuckles Basti Campmann. The reason is quite obvious. The band moves confidently and with playful ease between the genres of chanson, folk, electro, and funk. "Our core business is and remains rock, of course, even with this album," emphasizes keyboardist Ena Schwiers. And of course, the Kölsch language. The dialect: the common thread that holds everything together. That the band increasingly plays in front of an audience that is not fully capable of following the lyrics does not seem problematic to singer Basti Campmann: "Music is not always defined by the understanding of the lyrics."
