A Marriage in Ten Sessions by Nick Hornby
Doctor Louise and music journalist Tom seem to be on the brink of the ruins of their marriage. Their careers and household, the right balance of closeness and distance, the big question of sex – within and outside of marriage – have driven them towards separation. However, they are not ready to give up their marriage without a fight; after all, they have two children together. So they go to couple’s therapy every week, and before each session, they meet in a pub. Over beer and white wine, they prepare for the upcoming hour, discussing setbacks, progress, and speculating about the other clients of the therapist, whom they see leaving the practice from the pub. They have swept a lot of conflicts under the rug in recent years, but now they are digging them up again: more or less spectacular misunderstandings – things that will resonate with anyone in a long-term relationship. In this competition of injuries and triumphs, the pros and cons lead to a clear draw – and when it comes to opportunities for a good punchline, neither pulls their punches. Thus, these meetings turn into highly charged pre-scheduled therapy sessions without a therapist.
With his unparalleled humor and keen eye for his sympathetic anti-heroes, Nick Hornby tells the funny side of a marriage crisis. And while Tom and Louise are still searching for the cause of their misery, the audience already senses that with a bit of humor, some obstacles could be overcome.
