At almost 70 years old, Verdi actually did not want to compose another opera. But his librettist Arrigo Boito convinced him to set Shakespeare's Othello to music, in which Iago embodies evil, Desdemona represents good, and Othello is the tragic victim who becomes the instrument of evil and destroys good. When the opera was announced, all of Europe eagerly anticipated the premiere in 1887 – the applause at the end was boundless.
