Basel Adra is a young activist from Masafer Yatta, a Palestinian community in the West Bank. For years, Adra has documented the military operations in his village under Israeli occupation. In this time of turmoil, he meets Yuval, an Israeli journalist, and an unexpected friendship develops between them. However, their relationship is also shaped by the extreme inequality of their living conditions: Basel, who lives under military occupation, and Yuval, who can move freely.

A friendship that gives hope
Despite everything, the focus of No Other Land is the friendship between Basel and Yuval. A friendship between a Palestinian and an Israeli, both of whom perceive injustice and attempt to combat it through peaceful activism. Both document their situation via video and write articles to raise awareness in the world about their circumstance – a task they pursue resolutely despite numerous setbacks.
The background of “No Other Land” is deeply rooted in the reality of the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With material spanning over 10 years, filmmaker Basel Adra highlights the daily challenges faced by the Palestinian community of Masafer Yatta. The filming was marked by extreme conditions and a joint artistic collaboration under unequal circumstances. Basel and his film partner Hamdan had to remain in the West Bank due to military restrictions, while Yuval and Rachel operated from Jerusalem. With the help of international supporters, they were able to complete the documentary, which premiered at the Berlinale 2024.
“No Other Land” won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2025 Oscars.
