Star director Pedro Almodóvar stages ageing and dying for the first time
New York war correspondent Martha (Tilda Swinton) is suffering from terminal cervical cancer. Her old college friend, the autofictional writer Ingrid (Julianne Moore), is plagued by a great fear of death. Although Martha and Ingrid have lost sight of each other for many years and Martha's state of health painfully confronts Ingrid with her greatest fear, they become close again. First in hospital and finally in the middle of a nature reserve in New England, the two city dwellers Martha and Ingrid now live and write side by side, exploring the cruelty of war, politically and privately. While the friends grapple intensively with themes such as remorse, redemption and death, Ingrid also learns of Martha's greatest regret: Due to a misunderstanding, her daughter no longer speaks a word to her.
The moving drama premiered at the 81st Venice Film Festival at the end of August 2024 and won the main prize, the Golden Lion.
