Comedy DE 2024, 116 Min, FSK 6 Director: Natja Brunckhorst Cast: Sandra Hüller, Max Riemelt, Ronald Zehrfeld
TWO TO ONE, a large romantic comedy about love, friendship, money, and justice.
Halberstadt in the summer of 1990. Maren (Sandra Hüller), Robert (Max Riemelt), and Volker (Ronald Zehrfeld) have known and loved each other since childhood. Quite by chance, they find millions of East German Marks in an old shaft, stored away to rot. The three smuggle backpacks full of money out. Together with their friends and neighbors, they develop a clever system to exchange the now worthless money for goods and to outsmart the incoming West Germans and their capitalism. Because if you're a bit clever now, this summer can not only be a great adventure, but also the turning point in their lives.
For her summer comedy about a group of friends who want to stop the victorious march of capitalism together with their neighborhood, Natja Brunckhorst was able to draw on true events: millions of Marks from the GDR ended up in underground vaults near Halberstadt during the currency union – almost 400 tons of banknotes in total. What is certain is that money was stolen from this mine. To this day, no one knows exactly what sums were actually involved.
