“OH, HOW SWEET DOES THE COFFEE TASTE!” With these words, Liesgen exclaims in Johann Sebastian Bach's Coffee Cantata, which premiered in 1734 at the Leipzig coffee house “Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum.”
The cheerful story tells of a father's futile attempt to rid his daughter of the daily coffee drinking habit. That Bach himself was not averse to the new beverage is shown by accounts of organ examinations and weddings; his household also owned numerous coffee pots. Among Bach's seven surviving children were the 26-year-old Catharina Dorothea from his first marriage and the eight-year-old Elisabeth Juliana Friederica, known as Liesgen.
