machernbaroque: Coffee Cantata in the Kaisersaal at Schloß Lieser

“OH, HOW SWEET DOES THE COFFEE TASTE!” With these words, Liesgen exclaims in Johann Sebastian Bach's Coffee Cantata, which premiered in 1734 at the Leipzig coffee house “Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum.”

The cheerful story tells of a father's futile attempt to rid his daughter of the daily coffee drinking habit. That Bach himself was not averse to the new beverage is shown by accounts of organ examinations and weddings; his household also owned numerous coffee pots. Among Bach's seven surviving children were the 26-year-old Catharina Dorothea from his first marriage and the eight-year-old Elisabeth Juliana Friederica, known as Liesgen. Already at 2.15 p.m. we welcome you with a glass of sparkling wine in the castle and visit the castle chapel, the magnificent staircase, the historic library, and the restaurant "Puricelli."

The Coffee Cantata will sound at 3 p.m. in the Emperor Pavilion. In the Emperor Pavilion of Schloss Lieser, this charming musical plea for the once-trendy beverage resonates amidst a coffee table with the finest cake – the Coffee Cantata Participants: Johanna Kaldewei (Liesgen), soprano, Florian Götz (Father Schlendrian), bass, Christian Pohlers (Narrator), tenor.
The lautten compagney berlin provides the music.
