Opera by Christoph Willibald Gluck

The story in Christoph Willibald Gluck's opera "Orfeo ed Euridice" begins with the heartbreaking lament of the Thracian singer Orpheus at the grave of his deceased wife. Desperate, he calls upon the gods and demands that Eurydice be returned to him. Amor appears and announces that Orpheus may bring his wife back – but not without a test of trust: Orpheus must promise not to look at Eurydice on the way back. Orpheus accepts this condition, but his behavior causes Eurydice to doubt his love. When Orpheus finally succumbs and turns to her, Eurydice falls back into the underworld. After this renewed loss of Eurydice, Orpheus decides to end his life. However, Amor, touched by the singer's profound love, appears again to save him and calls Eurydice back to life as a reward for Orpheus' fidelity.

The Italian first version of this opera ("Azione teatrale per musica"), which will also be performed in this new production, premiered on October 5, 1762, at the Burgtheater in Vienna. The libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi is based on books from Ovid's "Metamorphoses" as well as Virgil's "Georgics" and "Aeneid." With his masterpiece, Gluck takes a bold step towards the reform opera he advocated. Moving away from contrived virtuoso craftsmanship, towards a focused narrative with expressively emotional music and dramaturgically integrated choral and ballet interludes.

The successful revival of works from the pre-classical repertoire at the Theater Koblenz, such as "Saul" and "Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno," finds its consistent continuation here and allows the orchestra, singers, and audience to engage intensively with essential works of our musical history.
