Final Chord
Program: Giuseppe Verdi – Messa da Requiem
It was not intended to be an ordinary church mass. Giuseppe Verdi, the Italian king of opera, composed his “Messa da Requiem” rather for the concert hall. It is more secular, more dramatic – an exceptional work full of power and conviction.
And that’s what makes it so special. Verdi's Requiem presents religious themes – the fear of death, hope for salvation, hellfire, and world-weariness – with the tone and expression of opera. This makes his mass one of the most important masterpieces of choral literature – particularly predestined for our traditional final chord on the national holiday.
The solemn finale is performed by orchestras, choirs, and soloists against the captivating backdrop of the High Cathedral with its unique acoustics. An experience!
