Ada manuscript from the Trier City Library
From the Trier Ada Manuscript, p. VII: "The Ada manuscript of the Trier City Library stands alone as a monument of Rhenish history of its kind; it is not only the most outstanding splendid codex of the country at all, it is at the same time the only one of the few Rhenish manuscripts from the Carolingian period which gives expression to the national sensibility within the great Carolingian art".
This description highlighted the importance of the precious codex as early as 1889, and in May 2023 it was designated a UNESCO World Documentary Heritage Site along with a small but very fine group of manuscripts, the Ada Group.
The Ada Group includes:
- The Godescalc Gospels (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale)
- The Gospels of St. Martin-des Champs (Paris, Bibliothèque de l`Arsenal)
- The Ada Gospels (Trier, Treasury of the Scientific Library of the City of Trier)
- The Dagulf Psalter (Vienna, Austrian National Library)
- A Gospels from Centula (Abbeville, Bibl. Municipale)
- A Gospels of unknown origin (London, British Library)
- A Gospels from St. Médard in Soissons (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale)
- The Lorsch Gospels (Alba Julia, Romania, Biblioteca Batthyäneum and Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana)
- A Gospel fragment containing the Annunciation to Zacharias (London, British Library)
