At the rest area “Aussichtspunkt Moseltal” East, there is an archaeological site. Here, the remains of a Roman villa from around 200 AD and a cellar can be found. The left bank of the Rhine was then a Roman province, namely Germania Superior at the Upper Rhine. The estate had been known since 1901, but it was not until the construction of the A61 motorway from Ludwigshafen to Koblenz that the site was first archaeologically examined in 1971. The main building was preserved and integrated into the extensive area of the Moseltal rest area as an archaeological monument. The total area of the estate originally measured 100 m x 100 m, making it more comparable to smaller and medium-sized farms. The main house, which is 30 m x 20 m in size, was equipped with 2 corner projections and had a small bathroom with underfloor heating in the left part. In the right part, there was also a heated room and a small cellar. Another cellar was found south of the house and preserved. When the estate was built and how long it was used is unfortunately unknown, as is the nature of the goods produced here. Due to the location and the current use of the slopes of the Moseltal as a wine-growing area, it is likely that wine was already among the products made here at that time.
