Church of St. Johannes

  • Hatzenport

The Hatzenporter Mountain Church, situated amidst the terraced vineyards, is one of the most picturesque church complexes in the Moselle Valley. There is an herb garden at the church.

The old Hatzenport parish church of St. Johannes is considered one of the most picturesque church complexes in the Mosel valley. The tower, built around 1280, still shows strong features of Romanesque design. About 200 years later, the rib-vaulted choir and the short nave with a flat ceiling were constructed. Characteristic of this late Gothic building phase just before 1500 are also the traceried windows. On the left side altar, there is a window with high-quality stained glass depicting the crucifixion of Christ. The valuable furnishings include the pulpit and the baptismal font, dating from around 1600, as well as the Baroque side altars and the wrought-iron chandelier from the mid-17th century. The clock mechanism, dating from the 16th/17th century, only indicates the hours (single-hand mechanism) – it is one of the oldest still functioning tower clocks in Germany. The clock face was largely restored to its original design in 1999 based on old templates.
