The Church of the Holy Spirit at the cemetery in Bernkastel is the only church dedicated to the Holy Spirit in the diocese.
It was formerly the church of the Hospital for the Poor of the Holy Spirit (building still partially preserved), which was probably built at the beginning of the 15th century at the gates of the town (in front of the Holy Spirit Gate, which was demolished due to the new road layout) for the poor and single people. The Holy Spirit altar was first mentioned in a document in 1542. The current church building was erected in 1673 after the previous building was demolished due to dilapidation.
In 1927, the street front was renovated in neo-Gothic style, as was the ridge turret. The last major renovation was completed in 1982. The small church is a quarry stone building (7.1 metres by 16.2 metres). The rectangular hall is divided into three naves by five columns. The central nave has a barrel vault with windows. In the two side aisles, wooden balustrades rest on the stone pillars on either side. The high altar (wood, painted in colour) was consecrated in 1673. A 17th century crucifix stands in the centre against a painted landscape background. The polychromed figures of Mary and John from the 2nd half of the 17th century stand to the side.
