City balcony at the Tummelchen

  • Cochem

In May, a new city balcony was officially opened in Cochem on the former Roman burial mound Tummelchen. This special viewing platform offers not only a breathtaking view of the old town and the Moselle River but also features a bronze relief of the city and an insect educational trail that invites exploration. In the past, weeds grew here, but today it has become a beautiful place for relaxation and wonder.

Tummelchen is the fourth city balcony in Cochem, from which you can enjoy the surrounding scenery to the fullest. Until the 1970s, the former Roman burial mound "Thomet" was still used for viticulture. When grape growing was abandoned here, the hill gradually became overgrown and fell into a kind of slumber, explains Frank Uhle from Cochem. He is a member of the citizen initiative Tummelchen, which lovingly redesigned the site on their initiative. But that was not all. Old engravings show that in the past, alongside the small water or sugar tower, there was also a small city house. This tiny house contributed significantly to the characteristic appearance of the hill and was an important part of the cityscape at the time.

Today, only a historical image recalls this period, but traces of history are still visible and make Tummelchen a fascinating place full of stories and memories.

From the corten steel-based seating levels, which resemble a Roman amphitheater, you have a wonderful view of the marketplace and the rooftops of the old town. This lookout point not only offers an impressive view of the lively city below but also provides a great opportunity to admire the historic structure and cityscape of Cochem.

You can recognize narrow streets, old half-timbered houses, and the imposing Reichsburg Cochem in the distance. The seating levels invite you to rest while soaking in the atmosphere of the city and enjoying the beauty of the surroundings.

"Here you can clearly see how medieval Cochem was built," says a visitor while admiring the picturesque landscape. The combination of modern design and historic character makes this place a special highlight for anyone wanting to experience the history and beauty of the city.

The view from here gives an insight into the city's historical development and shows how medieval Cochem has evolved over the centuries. It is a place that offers both tranquility and inspiration, perfect for discovering the fascinating history of this charming town.
