- Münstermaifeld
The former synagogue was built in 1885/86 and set on fire and devastated on November 10, 1938.
The ruins of the synagogue remained, initially neglected after 1945, then secured as masonry, a testament to the crimes against the Jewish citizens of the city. The ivy-covered walls were meant to serve as a reminder, or so hoped those who advocated for the preservation of the ruins. However, through habit, neglect can easily arise. Clearly, the ruins lay in obscurity, forgotten. When, 25 years ago, hatred towards foreigners and a willingness to resort to violence threatened minorities once again, it was students and teachers from the Kurfürst Balduin Gymnasium who advocated for a reconstruction. A place was to be created where remembrance and admonition, through participation and design by as many people as possible, would be directed towards the present and the future. Following this idea, the Friends of the Synagogue Münstermaifeld began their activities.
