Exhibition mine Barbara-Hoffnung with visitors‘ centre

  • Fell

Visitor Mine Fell - A Destination for the Whole Family The visitor mine Barbara-Hoffnung - in the Nossertal valley between Fell and Thomm - consists of two overlapping typical slate mines from the turn of the century. Since its opening on May 1, 1997, more than 330,000 visitors have entered the mine. A guided tour underground lasts about an hour at a constant temperature of 12 to 13 degrees Celsius. The new information center It all started with a question: how can the existing museum building of the visitor mine Fell be transformed into a visitor center that reports on the history of the former slate mine, the work underground, the use of slate, and its current applications using modern presentation methods? At the same time, a multifunctional use of the space for a bistro and additional cultural events should be created - all realized with a small budget. The solution was called “enclosure,” meaning that a second building was constructed above the original building, allowing all other requirements to be fulfilled in the space created – resulting in an architectural gem.

You are warmly invited to visit us!

The Barbara-Hoffnung visitor mine - in the Nossertal between Fell and Thomm - consists of two typical slate mining shafts (mines) from the turn of the century located on top of each other. Since the opening on May 1, 1997, more than 270,000 visitors have entered the mine. A guided tour underground lasts a good hour at a constant temperature of 12 to 13 degrees Celsius.
The visitor mine is located directly on the mining hiking trail, which passes by 10 slate mines and quarries and explains the history of mining in the Nossertal.
As the starting point of the dream loop "Schiefer-Wacken-Weg," which is part of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, the mine is ideal for hikes in the side valleys of the Moselle or along the old slate mines.
Here you will find our tour suggestions and our hiking dates.
We also take great care of your physical well-being. In our shop and at the snack bar "WeinStein," you will find a wide selection of souvenirs, refreshments, exquisite wines, and dishes. A terrace and slate-roofed pavilions invite you to linger.

The new information center
It all started with a question: how can the existing museum building of the Fell visitor mine be transformed into a visitor center that reports on the history of the former slate mine, the work underground, the use of slate, and its current applications using modern presentation methods? At the same time, a multifunctional space for a bistro and additional cultural events should be created - and all of this realized with a small budget. The solution was "encapsulation," meaning a second building was erected above the original building, in the created intervening space all other requirements could be realized – an architectural gem emerged.
