Fähre Klotten

  • Klotten
For the inhabitants of Klotten, crossing the Moselle was always a big problem, as the river could only be forded when the water level was normal. Around the 90s of the 19th century, masts were erected on both sides of the Moselle, connected to each other with a strong wire rope. A pulley was suspended from this, which was connected to a barge. The power of the river current was used for propulsion. In 1906, a Klotten citizen bought the first wagon ferry, which from then on safely ferried people, livestock and wagons - it was in operation until 1967. After the construction of the barrages and the regulation of the river, the current was no longer sufficient to drive the ferry, so the community purchased a new, larger ferry with a diesel engine. This ferry is still in service today and transports many cyclists and hikers across the Moselle every year.
