The volunteer fire department Burg (Mosel) celebrated the 75th anniversary of the current fire brigade at the May Day festival.

The Volunteer Fire Brigade Burg (Mosel)

Since 1834, there has been a so-called fire corps (mandatory fire department) in Burg. The firehouse at that time was a barn in the old parsonage. In 1837 and again in 1900, Burg experienced two devastating fires. In 1934, a volunteer fire department was established for the first time. Peter Schmidt (Sohrener Pittche) was elected as the fire chief. A fire brigade band was also founded. The initiators were mostly members of the local gymnastic club "frisch Auf" and musicians from the Burg music club "Grüne Eiche." Leading up to World War II, both organizations were dissolved again, and the mandatory fire department was reintroduced. During the shelling of the village at the end of World War II on March 15, 1945, the house of the station master was hit and burned down. The mandatory fire department unsuccessfully attempted to extinguish the fire, with Nikolaus Burch serving as the fire chief. After the difficult post-war years, the current volunteer fire department was founded in November 1950 in the singers' home under local mayor Paul Franzen. Josef Kirch was elected as fire chief and Erich Caspers as his deputy. The old hand pump was retired, and the first motorized pump, a Magirus TS, was purchased. In 1952, the roof of Otto Schorn's house completely burned down. Since 1970, the fire department has hosted the May Festival – first at Berghütt and since 2013 at the new firehouse. In 1973, the first St. Martin's parade was organized by the fire department, which still exists today. In 1979, the old bull stable was inaugurated as the new firehouse, which the firefighters themselves renovated, providing ample space for personnel and equipment. In 1982, the agricultural building of Maria Conrad (Schnäidsch Mayer) burned down. In the same year, the brigade received its first vehicle: a T2 VW bus named "MAX." In 2006, we moved into our current firehouse on Schulstraße, setting the course for the future – in light of growing challenges as well as modernizing equipment and the requirements of the 21st century. A year later, we received a TSF of the VW LT brand. With this vehicle, we were already able to respond with six members. In February 2020, we received our first newly procured emergency vehicle: a small fire-fighting vehicle with a 500-liter water tank. In 2025, on the occasion of the May 1st celebration, we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the current brigade, attended by even the last living founding member.
