- Saarburg
The Amüseum is located at the impressive waterfall. The building was constructed in 1657 as an electoral mill. After a tumultuous history, the mill is now in municipal ownership and houses the Amüseum, which showcases old trades and crafts from Saarburg.
A visit to the Municipal Museum Amüseum at the Waterfall should definitely be on your agenda. This year, visitors can explore the newly designed turbine room of the historic hydroelectric power station in the basement of the museum. In the former electoral mill above the waterfall, electricity was already being generated around 1900, initially with a water wheel and a generator, and starting in 1936 with a Francis turbine. The city of Saarburg has extensively refurbished the hydroelectric plant in 2023. A short, comic-like explanatory film in German and English introduces the history and functioning of the facility.
Through a listening tour in German and explanatory panels, guests can learn more about the facility, which is historic, sustainable, and state-of-the-art. A quiz about hydroelectric power is offered for children.
In addition to the hydroelectric facility, the museum showcases traditional Saarburg crafts (bell founder, printer, shoemaker, tanner, shipper, pharmacist) as well as interesting temporary exhibitions. On the ground floor, a parlor over 100 years old invites you to chat, linger, and relax (barrier-free). For children, there is a museum quiz (D, E, F, NL).

Our tip: A new mixed-reality experience makes the heritage of the hydroelectric plant digitally accessible. With the help of modern virtual reality glasses, visitors embark on a journey and follow the path of water - from the waterfall to the conversion into electrical energy. The experience combines technical knowledge with immersive images and clearly demonstrates the central role that hydropower has always played for the city.
