Guided tour gallo-romain temple Martberg

  • Treis-Karden

A magical place for Celtic and Roman gods, illustratively reconstructed on a high plateau above the Mosel. Go on a "pilgrimage" there!

It is hard to believe that an urban centre of the Celtic Treveri was located in this rural idyll. Later, a Roman temple complex stood here, attracting countless pilgrims. Thousands of offerings were found - coins, fibulae and jewellery that were intended to secure the favour of the gods. At least one person was heard: the Greek Tychikos survived a serious illness and subsequently dedicated a stone inscription. Among the gods worshipped was Lenus-Mars, who gave his name to Martberg. Then Christianity came and put an end to the cult. It's a good thing that part of the temple complex was recently reconstructed! Treis-Karden nearby became the new religious centre. St Kastor lived here in early Christian times and laid the foundation for a lively pilgrim centre. Today, the town has a remarkable historical monastery that you should not miss. In the Abbey Museum next to the church you will find religious treasures from pre-Christian and Christian times, including finds from Martberg.

A station on the Roads of the Romans.
