- Saarburg
The Amüseum is located at the impressive waterfall. The building was constructed in 1657 as an electoral mill. After a tumultuous history, the mill is now in municipal ownership and houses the Amüseum, which showcases old trades and crafts from Saarburg.
A visit to the Municipal Museum Amüseum at the Waterfall should definitely be on your itinerary. This year, visitors can explore the newly designed turbine room of the historical hydroelectric power station located in the museum's basement. In the former electoral mill above the waterfall, electricity was already being produced around 1900, initially with a water wheel and a generator, and from 1936 with a Francis turbine. The city of Saarburg thoroughly renovated the hydroelectric power station in 2023. A short, comic-style explanatory film in German and English introduces the history and functionality of the facility.
Through an audio tour in German and explanatory panels, guests can learn more about the facility, which is historically significant, sustainable, and state-of-the-art. A quiz on hydropower is offered for children.
In addition to the hydroelectric power station, the museum showcases the traditional Saarburg craftsmanship professions (bell founder, printer, cobbler, tanner, shipper, pharmacist) as well as interesting temporary exhibitions. On the ground floor, a parlor that is over 100 years old invites visitors to chat, linger, and relax (barrier-free). There is a museum quiz for children (D, E, F, NL).
