Historic "Eichhaus"

  • Minheim

Prussia initiated the establishment of state-controlled gauging offices in the Moselle municipalities. At special events and festivities, the tradition of gauging is explained using the example of gauging wine barrels at the “Minheimer Eichhaus” (the gauging office of Minheim).

In 1567, Elector Jacob III of Eltz initiated the “Eich” on the Moselle: a measuring practice for wine and other goods in wine proportions. The measuring unit was Ohm (1 Ohm = 160 litres). Only in the second half of the 19th century, the French tun (1 tun = 1000 litres) or the French litre, respectively, ousted Ohm as the standard measure for wine casks. Prussia initiated the establishment of state-controlled gauging offices in the Moselle municipalities.
