Historische Dorfschmiede Greverath

  • Niersbach-Greverath

The Greverath village smithy, a pretty little house in the middle of the village, was set up as a museum in 2014 and bought and lovingly renovated by the municipality of Niersbach. Today, the "Hedelischgippscha Greverath" association takes care of the facility.

From 1950 to 1975, Johann Huberty ran the small blacksmith's shop in Greverath, he sharpened ploughs, pointed harrows, made iron chains and he shod horses as well as cows that had to pull a cart with new horseshoes. When the blacksmith was going about his hard work in the village, people would meet at Johann's, have a chat and exchange news. In the 1950s and 1960s, workhorses were replaced by tractors - for many small village blacksmiths this meant the end. Today, the forge can be visited on request.
