- Zell (Mosel)
"Alteburg" Approximately 4. 5 km southeast of Zell, the late Roman "hilltop settlement of Alteburg" is located on a nearly inaccessible slate spur surrounded by the Altlayer stream.
The slate rock, rising about 75 m above the Altlayerbachtal, has an irregular summit area that gradually becomes narrower towards the northern tip, and several terrace-like ledges are located to the northwest. The length of the summit area is approximately 100 m, with its greatest width in the southwest being about 50 m (area approximately 0.33 ha). The fortification was surrounded by a dry stone wall. Larger sections of the outer wall can still be found, especially on the southwest flank, the west flank, and the northern tip. Little is known about the internal construction of the facility. Almost in the center, at the highest point of the plateau, the remains of a dry stone wall have been identified, possibly the remains of a tower-like building measuring about 9.0 m x 5.5 m in size. Traces of two rock chambers carved into the slate rock can be seen at the northwestern tip. From the "Alteburg," numerous finds of ceramics, bronze, and iron, including over a thousand coins, brooches, belt buckles and fittings, fragments of bronze vessels and statues, as well as tools and weapons made of iron, are known from surface finds, slope debris, and excavations. These finds suggest a late Roman use of the facility, lasting from the second half of the 3rd century to the second half of the 4th century AD.
