ARGO App - Burial mound

The name of the village already hints at the secret that the hill, located one kilometer from the entrance to the village, holds: Thomm comes from the Latin word "tumba," which means "grave" in German. And indeed, excavations uncovered a grave from around 400 BC, a chamber lined with wood measuring 4 x 2 meters. The grave goods testify to the special significance of the deceased: In addition to garment clasps (fibulae), weapons, and vessels, two bronze basins and a jug from Upper Italy were also found.

The grave belongs to a burial ground from the 6th to 3rd centuries BC, which extended for 1.5 kilometers along today's road to Hermeskeil, a route that was already significant before the Roman era for its connection to the metal-rich Hunsrück and the Nahe region.

The hill, which had sunk to a total height of only one meter over the centuries, has been partially reconstructed to its original form.

Tip: At the Rhenish State Museum in Trier, you can view the grave goods, including the Etruscan spouted jug.
