Landshut Castle

  • Bernkastel-Kues

Landmark of the town of Bernkastel-Kues, magnificent viewpoint - with a lovely restaurant.

If you want to see your enemies in time, you have to get high up. That’s why the Romans built a large fort on the hill above Bernkastel-Kues and gave it the name "Princastellum". It was so famous that early medieval manuscripts still told of it! And so now you also know how the town got its name. As part of a long chain of fortifications, the bulwark was supposed to protect the Mosel valley from the barbarians. It didn't help. Under the Frankish conquerors the fortress became a castle, and the castle met the fate of all castles: it was besieged, conquered, rebuilt and was a bone of contention in power-political intrigues. It survived the French invasion, but then fell victim – quite ingloriously – to a major fire. Today, the castle ruins are a really lovely destination for an excursion. There is an informative themed circular path and a modern restaurant.
It can be reached on foot in about ½ hour from the historic market square. Of course, there is also a road leading up to the castle. Or simply take the Burg-Landshut Express.

A station on the Roads of the Romans.
