The “Mehringer Blattenberg”
Mehring is one of the oldest wine towns on the Middle Moselle. People have settled here since Roman times (villa rustica, Quanat Mehring) and have been growing wine since the end of the 3rd century. The name "Blattenberg" comes from a time when the famous Prüm Abbey owned vineyards in Mehring. The "abbate plantare", i.e. the abbot planting, was used for the best quality and the wines were reserved for the abbot. To this day, Blattenberg is the most renowned location in Mehring. The vines here thrive on the steepest slopes with bright blue slate interspersed with quartzite deposits and pampered by sun and wind. The Moselle, which has been relatively wide since it was canalized at Mehring due to the Detzem barrage, stores and supplies the heat that is crucial for the growth of the vines, just like the Devonian slate. Heat-loving plants and animals also feel comfortable in this area. Insect hotels, numerous seating areas, adventurous "Wingertspedchen" (vineyard paths), dry stone walls and steps enable visitors to experience the lively Moselle vineyards with all their senses.
Scenic feature/landscape:
The extremely steep impact slope surrounds rock structures and is oriented south-south-west. It has slopes of over 50 percent in some cases. Rock outcrops and rock faces blend harmoniously into the landscape and, together with the dry stone walls made of slate quarry, form an impressive backdrop. Sufficient space was created on the vineyard terraces for the vines, some of which are very old. The different terrace levels can be reached via long and spectacular slate stairs.
