Cultivated terraces in viticulture are rare along the Upper Moselle. One of the few locations with terrace cultivation on the German Moselle side is the Rosenberg site in Wehr. In its heyday over 100 years ago, wines from this site fetched top prices and enjoyed worldwide fame. Even today, the wines from the Wehr Rosenberg are unique, as they possess their own characteristic profile with a hint of rose fragrance. Not only the wine itself, but also the vineyard is famous. The vines grow on numerous terraces, which are often only accessible on foot and are maintained by hand. Rock and dry stone walls alternate. Originally, these were small parcels sized between 89 and 120 square meters, which are now in the hands of the Carlsfelsen winery from Palzem. The Wehr Rosenberg boasts a remarkable richness of characteristic habitats, animal, and plant species and was awarded as a beacon of biodiversity in 2020. In the vineyard, wine peaches, red-fruited brambles, white sedum, and grape hyacinths grow. Numerous insects are on the move, such as the great mullein moth, the fumitory's web moth, or the musk beetle. One can observe wall lizards hunting among the rocks and on the dry stone walls.
A small via ferrata leads over the steep limestone cliffs and the narrow vineyard terraces of the Wehr Rosenberg. One quickly gains elevation and can enjoy the views into the Moselle valley and towards neighboring Luxembourg. As a highlight, one reaches an observation pavilion at the highest point, which invites for resting and picnicking.
NOTE:
Since 2020, the Wehr Rosenberg has been a beacon of biodiversity. As such, it was nominated by the nature experience companions Christiane Beyer and Alexander Schumitz and awarded by the Moselle Rural Development Center (DLR). The award is given as part of the initiative Living Moselle Vineyards. A prerequisite for this is that the area exhibits high biodiversity and is sustainably managed.
TIP:
The Wehr Rosenberg is part of the premium hiking trail Moselsteig-Side Trip "Wehr Rosenberg". The hike is just under five kilometers long and runs alongside the vineyard through diverse landscapes and the Helterbach valley with a primeval gorge forest. Moss-covered trees, vines, and the babbling brook create a unique jungle atmosphere.
