Machern Convent with historic doll, toy and icon museum

  • Bernkastel-Kues

The ‘Diversity Museum’ in Machern Monastery offers a wide selection of historical toys.

A few minutes' drive down the Moselle from the district of Wehlen, just after the Zeltinger Bridge, stands the "Machern Monastery", a former Cistercian nunnery. Where the Cistercian nuns used to have their hospital, there are now historical toys, Lego and icons as well as special exhibitions, including the history of the monastery. In the approx. 600 sqm museum, a playful world with a focus on the years 1860 to 1930 awaits the visitor. There are dolls, railways, cars, motorbikes with elaborate mechanics, buses and aeroplanes to admire. The brightly renovated rooms are accessible and furnished without steps. Visitors can discover the exhibition individually or with a rally by hand. The museum in Machern Monastery is also a central contact point for information about the monastery.

Permanent exhibition "Historical Toys"
In the Historical Toy and Doll Museum, an imaginative playful world of dolls and toys, character dolls and individual dolls opens up to the visitor. Unique of its kind in Germany is "Mein Liebling", a precious doll produced in 1909 by Kämmer & Reinhardt. The popular tin toys can also be admired in the museum at Machern Monastery. Let yourself be surprised by special exhibitions and seasonal leisure activities.

Permanent exhibition "Icons"
The Machern Monastery Icon Museum houses an important collection of over 200 historical icons and sacred objects. The icons come from Orthodox churches in Russia, the Balkan countries, Greece and Ethiopia. They represent the extensive private collection of the merchant Edmund Pauken and his wife Gisela from Bad Breisig.
