Moseltalbrücke (A 61)

  • Winningen

The Mosel Valley Bridge in Winningen, located between the Koblenz/Dieblich and Koblenz/Metternich junctions, consists of six bridge spans that rest on two abutments and five piers, the highest of which measures 123 meters. The single-cell steel superstructure, on which the motorway is carried, consists of a steel box girder with a widely projecting deck. Due to its location and construction, the Mosel Valley Bridge is the second highest motorway bridge in Germany.

The Moseltal Bridge is the crossing of the Federal Motorway 61 over the Moselle and simultaneously connects the Hunsrück with the Eifel. The motorway bridge is located between the municipalities of Dieblich and Winningen. The Moseltal Bridge was built between 1969 and 1972 on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport as part of the construction of the Federal Motorway 61. It is a steel beam bridge with foundations consisting of five piers and two abutments made of reinforced concrete, which were constructed using a combined sliding and climbing formwork. The bridge is 935 meters long and 30.5 meters wide. The maximum height of the roadway above ground is 136 meters.
Directly at the Moseltal Bridge, there are rest areas on both sides of the motorway to the north, each with a viewpoint overlooking the bridge and the Moselle Valley. Furthermore, a footpath under the bridge leads to the other side of the motorway. This footpath is also part of the stage 23 of the Moselsteig from Kobern-Gondorf to Winningen. Somewhat secluded below the rest area "Viewpoint Moseltal" East (travel direction north) are the steep slopes of Winninger Hamm. From the terraces there, one has a view of the Moseltal Bridge in its entirety.
At the rest area "Viewpoint Moseltal" East, there is an archaeological site. Here, the remains of a Roman villa from around 200 AD and a cellar can be found. The area on the left bank of the Rhine was at that time a Roman province, namely Germania Superior along the Upper Rhine.
